NTMI Graduate Spotlight - Cassie S., Class of ‘23

Why did you choose to become a Montessori teacher?

I've wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. I've always enjoyed helping others and teaching them new things. In school, I tutored some of my peers as well as younger students. In college, I worked as a tutor for elementary students. The more experience I gained, the more I was sure that this is what I want to do with my life. After graduating, I began studying Montessori Education and fell in love with the philosophy. As I read Dr. Montessori's books, something clicked in my mind, and I thought, "This is how learning is supposed to be. "

What is the most rewarding thing about being a Montessori teacher?

My favorite part of teaching is seeing the growth and transformation in each child. In a Montessori environment, that growth is able to happen in it's own time according to each child’s needs.

What is one thing you learned during the program that you will always keep with you?

One thing that I have learned and am constantly working on is slowing down, being present, and observing the beauty of childhood.

What is your proudest accomplishment from your time at the North Texas Montessori Institute?

My proudest accomplishment from my NTMI experience is the spiritual transformation that goes along with the Montessori philosophy. Through our class discussions and through reading Dr. Montessori's words, it was like a light turned on and I understood how childhood ought to be and how we, as guides, should nurture children. This spiritual transformation will always be an ongoing process, but this experience has made me a better teacher and a better mother.
